Mental Maths

Research has shown that our less able kids in mathematics tend to stay longer with primitive and less efficient strategies when working on computations and that the vast majority of primary school children are not exposed to the full range of strategies for mental computation.
With this is mind it is important to remember the following points:
1) Mental arithmetic is the main form of calculation used by at least 75% adults.
2)Mistakes are easy to make on calculators so using mental arithmetic it is easier to keep a check on calculators.
3) Mental strategies are often the easiest way to solve computations.
4) Mental strategies provide a wonderful way of learning how numbers work.
5) When children compute mentally the adopt a problem solving approach.
